Abstract
Among the various diseases of the elderly in Korea, the prevalence of diabetes is increasing every year. It is also identified as a major factor in deteriorating oral health in the elderly. Therefore, this study aimed to find out the relationship between diabetes, and the number of remaining teeth in the middle and old age group. The subjects of this study were those who participated in the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging(KLoSA). Diagnosis of diabetes, number of teeth, age, gender, education level, income level, mental health status, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, drinking, smoking, and exercise were analyzed using logistic regression analysis. As a result, the odds ratio of having less than 20 teeth in Korean subjects diagnosed with diabetes in the middle and old age group of 45 years or older was 1.18(1.03-1.37), which was statistically significant. Patients with diabetes showed a significantly higher risk of tooth loss than patients without diabetes. Therefore, according to the risk factor approach of health promotion, it is necessary to revise and supplement the oral health policy, such as insurance coverage for gingivitis treatment in diabetic patients.
